In the Nursery: Gates at Six Months

On Thursday, Gates had her six month check up at the Pediatrician. It's now time for baby proofing (like yesterday it turns out) and for solid foods. Here's a snapshot of what Gates was up to leading up to her six month birthday and how our lives continue to change.

Snapshot of Gates at Six Months

At the beginning of September, Gates and I had a mini-staycation while cubes went to Portland for XOXO, increasing my already high respect for single parents. I had my hands full, and I wasn't even dealing with commutes and work!

When people say babies change fast, they're not kidding. Here's what Gates was up to before she celebrated her six month birthday on October 2nd (basically it's how she spent September).
  • Less than a week after turning five months, Gates began feeding herself.
  • She now reaches the turtle on her rocker and pulls him to play music.
  • Play covers almost the entire bedroom floor; the play gym is a distant memory (dismantled and removed from the nursery after Gates learned how to unsnap the supports).
It was also the first month we had a social life. I was invited to a Girls' Night Out (seriously thought that my girlfriends had forgotten me!), and I went! cubes and I found someone within our community who is great with kids and is up for baby sitting Gates. He sat for us so that both cubes and I were able to go to our friends Aislynn and Michael's wedding.

For as long as I can remember, I've loved to cook and to entertain. September marked the month where pots and pans were dusted off. After two months of taking Gates to stay with my parents while we work, cubes and I figured out weeknight meals. Cooking not once together but twice! (The secret? Maximize the "pre;" purchase as many pre-washed, pre-cut, and/or pre-cooked items as possible.)

October has already brought many more changes to our daily routine. Had I not been chronicling the little things and the moments that I'm thankful for the days would all roll into one. Time's always gone by quickly for me, but with Gates it seems to be ever more accelerated. Both cubes and I take lots of photos of Gates with our iPhone. I sift through the photos each month and select a subset. I'm collecting my notes, our iPhone photos, and Gates' official portraits into mini-yearbooks; the first yearbook will be Gates' first six months.

Do you mark milestones?
Please share how you make them special.

In The Nursery is a monthly series, published on either the second or fourth Monday of each month, depending on whether Gates has a well baby check up or not, that chronicles Gates' growth during her first twenty four months.
