Photographer's Responsibility - Make Clients Look Good

Photographers walk a fine line between reality and fine art. True artists are able to capture souls with their cameras and create fine art that best represents who their client is.

When I first meet a client, I observe mannerisms. For couples, I watch how they interact and look for special signals - squeezing of a hand, light in eye, etc. When I process photos (and yes even with digital I process photos), I look for the shots that capture the essence of my clients. I look for shots, where I wish I was in the photograph. I hate having my photo taken - this is a common refrain of most photographers that I've met. I got into photography because I wanted to capture what I saw - not the black and white of a scene, but the emotion and the soul of the moment.

I've been incredibly lucky to be able to photograph Livewire Cover Band for over a year. I had taken a break from photography before I began following Livewire. They inspired me to take another look at photography, and push myself outside my comfort zone. Capturing the soul of a person in low light, high energy environments challenges you to step up your game.

Take Me Out to the Ballgame

This coming Sunday, I'll be out and about shooting the action at the Project Open Hand/SF Giants Plate to Plate 5K 8/24/08 Race presented by AT&T. I'll primarily be hanging out in McCovey Cove (located at Terry Francois Blvd (cross street 3rd St.)) while Livewire performs from 9:15am-12:45pm.

Stop by to say hi, get your photo taken, and celebrate finishing the race. For more information about the race, call 415-447-2316 or visit their website.

Photographers in Action

This past weekend was a busy weekend for me. Up to Tahoe with Livewire - and a surprise opportunity to have free reign to photograph the guests and dance floor when the hosts hired me - and then back to Casa de Blanco in San Jose to photograph 9 teenagers (7 young women and 2 young men) for a spread on Quinceañeras and Proms.

I always enjoy seeing snaps that friends or family take while I'm working (Tracy's captured me at Foster City and Kevin's video of the band regularly features flashes of me). Thomas's dad, Jon, took this photograph of me shooting an outdoor portrait of Thomas at Fallen Leaf Lake.

To see two photographers from Hollye Schumacher Photography in action (photographers whose work I really like and who I met at the party on Saturday), check out a video posted to their blog on their website. The video features Hollye, but you can see Eric as the bride and groom walk down the aisle.
